The 10R80 transmission uses a pump to circulate transmission fluid through a valve body. However, the pump differs from a conventional front-mounted pump design by using a gear-driven rotor pump. Ford engineers chose this layout because it is quieter than a chain and sprocket system. In addition, the idler gear ball bearing chosen offers incredible strength and quieter performance compared to a roller bearing.
