General Motors is Still Alive

General Motors may be gone but the beloved Brand is still very much alive in South Africa

After more than 90 years, General Motors ' decision to exit the South African market had Isuzu, Chevrolet and Opel owners extremely unsure about the departure of the iconic Brand. However separation anxiety was curbed by GM’s assurances to the South African public of ongoing after-sales and service support by Isuzu, with the emphasis that that all existing warranties and service plans remained in place to be honoured under new stewardship by Isuzu South Africa.

General Motors stated that they stood by their products and didn’t believe there would be a need for customers to sell their vehicles back to the dealers, especially as each vehicle's warranty and after-sales service were being honoured. General Motors also pledged that there will be a supply of parts, after production of your model has ceased in the country, for the next ten years. Unfortunately there is a resulting fallout for owners of Chevrolets etc, as additional depreciation (over and above normal depreciation that most cars are subject to) has already set in, because of the GM exodus. Essentially, it means that owners will generally receive less for their vehicles than before when trading them in or when selling them on.

Even though General Motors announced that they didn’t anticipate a massive fallout from their exit, what has it actually meant for South Africans who can't, or unwilling to buy a new car in an uncertain economy, and may be driving an ex-General Motors vehicle brand, like Chevrolet?
